What happens to Health Data? – A guide by Understanding Patient Data

Understanding Patient Data (UPD) is a hosted organisation of the NHS Confederation in London, UK. It is funded by Wellcome, the Medical Research Council, the National Institute for Health and Care Research and NHS England.

Understanding Patient Data aims to make the way patient data is used more visible, understandable, and trustworthy, for patients, the public and health professionals. In 2022 they released an interactive document on What happens to Health Data: A guide to large datasets.

The guide is an introduction to the way that health data is gathered, stored, and used in the NHS today. With the hope that the guide will allow you to seek out further information and help you feel more aware of the data that is kept about you
